ECU Biology Professor Elected Treasurer for the Society for the Study of Evolution

Jeff McKinnon, PhD

Congratulations to Jeffrey McKinnon, professor, who was recently elected treasurer of the Society for the Study of Evolution. The Society for the Study of Evolution, founded in 1946, is a leading professional society that promotes the study of biological evolution, publishes the highly impactful journal Evolution, and hosts an annual international conference for evolutionary biologists from around the world to meet and discuss the most recent scientific findings and issues relevant to evolutionary biology. 👏

Since earning his PhD in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard in the mid’ 90s, Dr. McKinnon has conducted research in the fields of evolution, animal behavior, speciation, and sexual dimorphism. His work has primarily focused on the evolutionary biology of fish, but he is also very keen to improve the public’s understanding of nature. Recently, he published his popular book “Our Ancient Lakes: A Natural History” with MIT Press.

Jeff previously served as an Associate Editor for Evolution and looks forward to continuing to serve the Society for the Study of Evolution for a three-year term as treasurer. In writing about his service, he indicated, “I hope that I can help the society prosper and that it, in turn, will continue to serve and grow the discipline of evolutionary biology. The society is a historic one, having been founded by giants of the field and led by people I greatly respect. Its conferences and journal have been central to my career, so I am pleased and honored to be in a position to give back a little. I think professional societies have an especially important role to play in our current tumultuous period, especially in supporting junior scientists.”
