Scholarships
All Biology scholarship recipients are selected through the information submitted in Academic Works. Please reapply every year between September 1st and January 15th. View “Helpful Tips” to strengthen your application.
Charles Bland Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate students (juniors and seniors) who have been accepted for admission or are enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit: at least a 3.0 GPA at ECU
- Demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in biology.
Detlev M. Bunger Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to junior or senior undergraduate biology majors who are enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit: at least a 3.0 GPA at ECU
- Demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in aquatic science or environmental biology.
Michael L. Bunting Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to students who are enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit
Raymond and Ryan Church Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility:
- A biology or biochemistry major.
Hal J. Daniel Scholarship
Eligibility:
- A biology or biochemistry major.
Mary Caughey Helms Scholarship
Eligibility: Graduating senior biology major with the most outstanding record in scholarship and contribution to the department, the university and the community.
Carol Goodwillie and John Stiller Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility:
- Full time students majoring in Biology; especially those with interests in plant biology, ecology or evolution
- Demonstrated financial need
- Students who are recovering from a low early GPA will be considered competitive for this scholarship
Gerhard W. Kalmus Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to members of the Biology Honor Society (Tri-Beta) who are enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit
- Service to the Biology Department
Edward P. Ryan Award
Eligibility: A scholarship shall be awarded to an undergraduate who is enrolled full time in the Department of Biology at East Carolina University.
- Academic Merit
- Interest in and commitment to the pursuit of a career in marine biology.
Everett C. Simpson Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit: at least a 3.0 GPA at ECU
Slate Family Scholarship
Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time rising junior who is enrolled full time in the Department of Biology. Other criteria in order of priority are:
- Academic merit: at least a 3.0 GPA at ECU
The Matt and Kelly Slate Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment
Eligibility: This scholarship is available to support students in the Department of Biology who are planning to study abroad.
- Biology major
- Intention to study abroad during the summer, fall or spring
John Stiller Scholarship
Eligibility:
- A biology or biochemistry major.
University Book Exchange Scholarship
Eligibility: This award is made in recognition of academic merit. Recipients must have an overall GPA of 3.0. Additional selection criteria include:
- enrolled full time for fall and spring semesters
- contributions to the department and /or university, and ;
- potential to contribute to the field(s) of biology.
