In remembrance of Dr. Enrique Reyes
The Department of Biology is deeply saddened by both the tragic events that led to the deaths of Dr. Enrique Reyes, and Tony and Paula Gribble and that these individuals are no longer with us.
Dr. Enrique Reyes was a member of ECU’s Department of Biology for 17 years prior to his retirement in 2022 and had an important and meaningful impact on our faculty, staff, and students.
Enrique challenged his students to excel in the classroom where he taught ecology and environmental biology. Enrique was a dedicated and influential mentor to many faculty and graduate students. His impact went beyond ECU as he was a well-respected scientist serving twice on the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation Board and as president of the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society; professional organizations focused on improving our understanding and protection of coastal ecosystems. Enrique was an ecologist who focused on computational approaches to studying nature and he loved outdoor adventures (especially on his motorcycle), traveling, and his dogs and cats. Enrique had both an inscrutable and goofy sense of humor that could at times portray a tough demeanor, but he had a big heart and cared deeply about his colleagues and students. He was always ready to invite people to a meal and willing to celebrate events in support of his friends and colleagues. Enrique had an impressive knowledge of food and drink, was a great cook, and readily entertained. Having a diverse array of gadgets, Enrique was prepared for almost any activity in the field, lab, or in the kitchen. Enrique was a great friend to many and his colleagues and students will miss him dearly.
Our sincere sympathies to the families and friends of Dr. Enrique Reyes and Tony and Paula Gribble.
