Biochemistry
Why Biochemistry?
The Bachelor of Science in biochemistry degree can be applied to many disciplines and professions that include medicine, pharmacology, drug research and development, biotechnology, agricultural research, and genetic engineering. Biochemistry is a core discipline that provides the foundation for nearly all advances in all fields related to health professions, biotechnology, and agriculture. This program offers a combination of biology, chemistry, math, and physics classes that will prepare you for successful entry into the work force.
The Biochemistry degree is a good gateway for professional schools such as medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary and other health related graduate programs.
ECU’s BS in Biochemistry degree has received full accreditation from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). ASMBB has accredited more than 100 programs nationwide since 2013 and East Carolina University represents the third accredited program in the state of NC. This accreditation signifies that the ASBMB recognizes ECU’s BS Biochemistry program as upholding the highest standards of quality and innovation in biochemistry and molecular biology education and provides students with a curriculum that aligns with the fundamental concepts and critical reasoning skills needed by individuals with interests in pursuing a career in biochemistry.
Options
The Biochemistry degree is comprised of core courses that provide fundamentals in the fields of biology, chemistry, math and physics. You can then choose from the two concentrations described below depending on your career interest. We strongly encourage our students to engage in co-curricular activities such as research, internships, study abroad.
Biology (molecular biochemistry)
In this concentration, in addition to the fundamentals described above, you will explore molecular aspects of biochemistry which include bioinformatics, biotechnology, molecular biology of the gene and microbiology.

Preparing students….
As a biochemistry major you will be involved in research projects in your areas of interest. Independent research projects with biology, chemistry, or medical school faculty will provide you with valuable hands on experience in the laboratory. You will have the opportunity to present your research at regional and/or national meetings. You will be highly employable.
