Biology
Why Biology?
The objective for the Biology program is to prepare you with the knowledge and confidence to apply the scientific method in biological research; train you to communicate scientific discoveries in standard scientific formats; educate you so you are able to apply foundational biological concepts necessary for graduate education, professional schools or a career in the biological sciences.
The BS-Biology degree is a good gateway for professional schools such as medical, dental, veterinary and other health related graduate programs.
The BA-Biology degree prepares students for careers in education, industry, public health, environmental monitoring and graduate school.
Options
The Biology degree is comprised of core courses that encompasses the main areas of Biology: ecology, evolution, physiology, and cell and developmental biology. You can then choose from the three concentrations described below, depending on your career interest. We strongly encourage our students to engage in co-curricular activities such as research, internships, study abroad.
General Biology Concentration
This is the most flexible concentration where you will select elective courses that will fit your specific career interest with the help of your advisor.
Molecular and Cell Biology Concentration
In this concentration, you will focus your studies in the fields of biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology and molecular research.
Ecology and Evolution Concentration
In this concentration, you will focus your studies in the fields of animal behavior, biodiversity, coastal and marine biology, conservation biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and plant biology.
BA-Biology
The BA-Biology degree is more adaptable than the BS-Biology and provides a broad based biological background with increased hands-on experience, and enough flexibility for students to tailor their courses in key areas to facilitate career development in the STEM field.
Explore Your Path Forward
Each biology degree offers a unique way to reach your goals—whether you’re preparing for professional school, research, or a career in the life sciences. View our four-year sample plans to see how your interests can take shape semester by semester.
Preparing Students for Future Careers
Our biology graduates follow many paths—some enter health professions, while others continue their studies with master’s or doctoral degrees, exploring a wide range of biological fields. Biology graduates who enter the workforce immediately after completing their degree are well-prepared for a wide range of careers in research, teaching, environmental biology, science writing, and many more. A degree in biology is versatile, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to pursue diverse and meaningful careers that make a difference in the world.
